Caps finally lose, or, why it’s fun to be correct sometimes.

Last night I opined that, in my opinion, the Washington Capitals undefeated streak could end in Edmonton and lo and behold, the deed was done with a 2-1 win by the Oilers at Rexall Place.

Fans of the Caps can return to earth now after a game that they probably should have won. Statistically speaking, the Caps outshot and outclassed the Oilers all the way except one category that I’ll get to in a moment. It was Edmonton’s power play won the night, literally, with both of their goals on man advantage with goals by Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle. (Fantasy players take  note, If you don’t have Hall in your lineup, you might want to consider getting this all around great winger in just about any league type as he’s catching fire)

This was the only statistic that Washington probably didn’t want to lead in but, in my opinion, the story behind their demise was penalty after penalty with 18 Penalty minutes amassed in the 1st two periods. It’s hard to win games when you’re literally rotating players in and out of the sin bin. In each of the first two periods the Caps were skating at a 2 man disadvantage. Sloppy play leads to sloppy results.

The Oilers only got 19 shots on goal to Washington’s 35, with nearly half of those coming in the 3rd period when they were already down 1-2 and big props to Edmonton net minder Nikolai Khabibulin with a huge night turning  away 34 of those shots.
