Wild tame Kings

It was all Minnesota, all the time last night. The Minnesota Wild in a franchise-record setting sixth straight win, topped the Los Angeles Kings 4-2 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The Wild, who seem to have come out of nowhere, are now 19-7-3, hold the top spot in the NHL standings with 41 points which includes a three game sweep of every California franchise team (San Jose, Ducks & Kings). Fans should take note and not only give credit to the Minnesota Wild, but now, pay more attention to them as well. To be honest, I had to look up some of their statistics and when I did, boy was I shocked.  3rd in the league in shoot-out goals, 11th in the league for penalty kills, 3rd in the league for goals against and 7th in the league for plus/minus. The Wild also lead the NHL in allowing the fewest goals in the third period. Wow.

With the NHL nearing the halfway point in the season(12 more games to go), the Wild should be taken seriously as a Western Conference contender. Possibly even the Stanley Cup. The Kings on the other hand, not so much. Last night, the Kings out shot the Wild 44-24. While not exactly a 2:1 ratio, it’s pretty close. And for all of those shots, we only get 2 goals?! “Look at our shot pool,” Kings captain Dustin Brown said. “In 40-whatever shots we got two goals. We have to find ways to score goals. I give Hackett credit, He made some pretty big saves.” No kidding. Matt Hackett looked like Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic 5 on the ice last night. Bending every which way he could to stop goals. It was fantastic! (Ha ha!) “I can’t even explain it,” Hacket said of the past 72 hours. “It’s been crazy. The best 72 hours of my life so far. We’ve got to keep it going.”

The Kings face off against the Dallas Stars Saturday night at the Staples Center. The puck drops at 7:30 PM on Fox Sports West. GO KINGS GO!
