Deryk Engelland suspended 3 games, Ott vs Laviolette and more

EngellandAfter a brutal, launching check to the head of Blackhawks forward Marcus Kruger on Tuesday night, the NHL has suspended Penguins defenseman Deryk Engelland 3 games. No penalty was called during the play midway through the 1st period. He’ll be eligible to return to the lineup for the Pens New Years Eve game in New Jersey.

Ott Gets into it with Flyers’ coach Laviolette

In case you missed it, there was a little post game action heading into the tunnel last night as Dallas players were leaving the ice for the first intermission. From the video, you can see that Philadelphia Flyers’ coach Peter Laviolette decided he couldn’t wait for the Sta’s players to proceed through the tunnel and shoved his way past Steve Ott.

Ott would later call the tussle disrespectful and that Laviolette should have just waited for the home team to file into the tunnel.  “He obviously thought he has a higher power than everybody else and a little bit more arrogance than most coaches in the NHL. That’s probably the first time I’ve seen that. I would never do that against Philadelphia if I was in their building. Just show a little respect, that’s all,” said Ott of the incident.

Laviolette declined to discuss the incident which leads me to believe that maybe he just needed to use the powder room after watching Ott lay a wicked hit on Claude Giroux in his first game back from a concussion.

Michalek out through Christmas

We covered it here last week as part of a larger injury article and Ottawa Senators’ Milan Michalek will not play until at least December 27 and will continue to focus on his conditioning prior to resuming play as he recovers from a concussion. Michalek suffered the concussion after colliding at full speed with teammate Erik Karlsson in their matchup with the Sabres last Tuesday.Milan Michalek
