2012 NHL ALL-STAR ROSTER

Skaters on the Rideau River in Ottawa.

The NHL All-Star weekend is just 2 weeks away! Back by popular demand this year is the Player Fantasy Draft. Allowing the players to vote for their team captains and then by extension, for the team captains to “draft” their team. The Player Fantasy Draft will start on Thursday January 26, at 5 PM PST. The Skills Competition will take place on Saturday January 28, at 4:00 PM PST with the All-Star game airing on Sunday January 29, at 1:00 PM PST.

Here is a link to the entire 2012 All-Star roster:

Only one Kings player made it on the roster I’m afraid to say. I’m a bit disappointed about that. But a big congratulations goes out to Jonathan Quick (#32) of the Los Angeles Kings for being named to the team! That is a big nod and a well deserved one! All-in-all, I did not see a lot of surprises on this list. Tim Thomas won the fan vote among goalies with 626,540 total votes. More than a 120,000 votes ahead of Toronto goalie, James Reimer. This will be Thomas’ fourth consecutive appearance in the NHL All-Star game. Boston head coach Claude Julien had this to say about Thomas’ All-Star accolades: “It shows that he’s got some recognition around the League and people see him as the great goaltender that he is,” Julien said Wednesday from Prudential Center. “At one point we have to get past the fact that he was the unknown and he’s come from nowhere. He did, but that’s in the past.”

And surprise, surprise, Alex Ovechkin (OVECHKIN!!) was among the 36 players added by the League’s Hockey Operations Department as fill-ins for the All-Star Game. It will be Ovechkin’s fifth All-Star Game appearance. He previously played in 2007-09 and again in 2011. The League did not hold an All-Star Game in 2006 and 2010 due to the Olympics. I was only slightly taken aback at this choice as Ovechkin is on pace for career lows in every offensive category except for goals. Though I will admit freely that Ovechkin is hilarious to watch in the All-Star game and ALWAYS makes the highlight reels for his outrageous shenanigans.

I am really looking forward to this year’s game and I hope all of our loyal readers are too! It’s a great excuse to watch some hockey and watch the players have some fun!!
